"What You Need to Know to Care for Your Awning Canopy"

With proper maintenance and care, your awning will last for years and look like new if it is properly cared for and maintained. When you get your new awning be sure to read the manufactures cleaning and care guide.

There is a difference on how to care for a fixed awning canopy verses a retractable awning.

General awning canopy care and maintenance.

Do not allow dirt to build up on your awning canopy.

Regularly sweep the awning off with a broom and rinse it down with water.

Wash the awning with a mild soap, use of harsh detergents can damage the fabric.

Do not allow the soap to dry on the awning canopy. Be sure to rinse all of the soap residue off.

Do not clean the awing in temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold water on a hot awning canopy can cause it to crack

Reapply a water repellent substance annually to the awning to assure that it is protected from the elements of the sun and rain. If the awning is not properly protected the fabric can crack or shrink.

Special care and maintenance required for a retractable awning  .

In addition to the general cleaning and maintenance tips above, retractable awnings require these special tips.

A retractable awning should not be closed when wet. Wait until it dries before you retract it.

There are dyes in your awning canopy and if retracted while it is wet, it could cause the colors on the awning canopy to bleed and run.

An awning canopy that is retracted or folded when wet can also mildew.

If you  take your canopy down every year and store it, be sure it is dry before you put it away. Clean it in the Spring before you reinstall it.

An application such a 303 Hi-Tech Fabric Guard or something similar is recommended.
